Introduction

The Mpumalanga Tour will take place from 18 to 23 January 2016, being the only 6 six day road cycle challenge in South Africa, offering a total prize pool of R200 000. The 6 daily stages will cover a total distance of 752 km from Loskopdam to Badplaas, Mbombela, Graskop and Blyde River Canyon.

Cyclists will have to take up the challenge of facing a total climb of 11 500m, with Robbers Pass and Kowyn’s Pass as the most famous and gruelling mountain climbs. Tackling the Kranspoort Pass on the first stage will set the pace and provide the ideal warm-up for the rest of the Tour. The Organisers effectively created an equal ground for cyclists of levels of skill and age to experience the murderous mountain climbs and steep downhills in a safe environment.

The Mpumalanga Tour is reminiscent of the Hanson and Rapport Tours of yesteryears travelling from town to town and the first of its kind to offer the ultimate challenge to open category cyclists to compete with the professional cyclists of South Africa. Even though some stages will be a shorter distance, the route for the open category riders will be the same as for the Elite group.

The organisers plan to introduce this race as an international UCI event by 2017. The main sponsors of the event are Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation Mpumalanga, Forever Resorts South Africa and Europcar. The timing of the Tour is ideal for cyclists to train for the South African Championships in February 2016 and the ABSA Epic in March 2016.

A unique aspect of the Tour is the fact that the Organisers will provide transport assistance to all cyclists that are not part of organised teams. Europcar will make available 3 combi’s and 4 neutral vehicles to carry luggage daily between each stages and back to Loskopdam. The Organisers agreed with the Road Director of Cycling South Africa to allow teams comprising of more than 5 cyclists in the Junior and Vets groups to have a team vehicle on the road with them. This is however subject to them having a licenced team manager.

In an exciting twist to attract unlicenced cyclists, there will be a challenge between larger companies and business groups to enter corporate teams, with R20 000 as the prize ticket attached. A number of high profile teams already committed to enter teams to participate.

The Tour will end off on Sunday 24 January with a Criterium (Kermesse) for the professional riders around the Mbombela Stadium. This will coincide with a family cycle day at the stadium that will suitable for all members of the family.

The following categories of riders will participate:

  • Elite, U/23 Men
  • Elite Ladies
  • Open Vets
  • Corporate Open Category
  • Individual Open Category
  • Junior Men

Please note:

  • Elite & U/23 will ride together in one group. On stages 1, 4 and 6 they have a longer distance than the other group.
  • Elite Ladies, Open categories and Junior men will ride together in one group. Their distance on stages 1, 4 and 6 are shorter than the Elite group, but still on the same route.
